About the Author

Jason is a Colorado native and was raised in the mountains at over 9,000 feet in elevation, where he developed a strong connection and love for the mountains, nature, and the great outdoors. He began bowhunting elk in college, backpacking alone in the San Juan National Forest around Durango, Colorado, carrying everything needed to survive for many days on his back while hiking and tracking elk into some of the most beautiful and remote country.

The learning curve for bowhunting elk back in the early 1990s was steep, especially since he hunted alone and was self-taught. He now, in his early 50's, chases the elk herds predominantly in the Pike National Forest, public BLM lands, or on private land around the Pikes Peak region of Colorado under 100% fair chase conditions. With decades of bowhunting experience, he hunts predominantly alone as a Do-It-Yourself (DIY) hunter or hunts with a few friends that share his passion for hunting elk. He has not utilized special draw areas, trophy fee lands, pay-to-hunt ranches that manage for trophy bull elk, or used outfitters for any of his hunts. Rather, he relishes in participating in all aspects of the hunt from scouting to hunting to processing the game himself.

He thrives on the bond and the connection that is created to the sustenance from the hunt and enjoys preparing and consuming the nutrient-dense, clean, and healthy protein elk meat provides. He planned the birth of his kids around archery elk season as to not conflict with being in the mountains during birthdays. And he is a lifetime member of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation and encourages discussions on how hunting and hunters are the largest group of conservationists and provide the majority of funding, through their license sales, for the Colorado Parks and Wildlife's game management programs. Programs that have not only been tremendously successful but are envied throughout the world.
