About the Author

Born in New York, Evan Hunter (1926–2005) wrote the screen play for Hitchcock’s The Birds in 1963. He received the Grand Master Award from the Mystery Writers of America and is one of three American writers to be awarded the Diamond Dagger for a lifetime of achievement by the British Crime Writers Association.

Under the name Ed McBain, he authored the sprawling 87th Precinct series — the longest, most varied crime series in the world — which includes fifty-five novels about a fictional team of policemen, and thirteen novels in the Matthew Hope series featuring an up-and-coming lawyer in the Florida Gulf Coast. Known for tackling controversial content with a thoughtful eye, he is the author of over eighty novels.

Matthew Hope, the protagonist of Ed McBain's "other" series (not the 87th Precinct), is a Calusa, Florida, lawyer who has survived via his wits and his sense of ethics. He's also a damn good lawyer. But none of those qualities can stop the two bullets that penetrate his body outside a bar in a bad neighborhood. He'd gone to meet someone, but who? As Hope fights for his life while in a coma, those closest to him--black private-eye Warren Chambers; Hope's significant other, Patricia, an assistant state's attorney; and his partner, Frank Summerville--pick up the pieces of their friend's case. It turns out he was investigating the possible murder of a woman connected to a local circus. What sets the novel apart is McBain's provocative use of alternating points of view. The story is presented through the eyes of Hope's three friends plus Hope himself. His is a disturbing, dreamlike vision that fades along with his irregular brain waves. The case is solved, but Hope remains on the critical list, suggesting that a sequel may be long in coming--or that Hope is about to become our first comatose sleuth.
