Her voice roots the listener in a very particular time and place—the antebellum South—in a story that melds magic and real history. Miles's Louisiana accents are rich and warm and varied, bringing to vivid life a cast of characters who help or hinder Sophie—men and women, children and elderly matriarchs, even otherworldly beings—as she comes of age against a backdrop of slavery, racism, and civil rights struggles.
