The title derives from a message sent to tycoon Andrew Carnegie on his deathbed. The once mighty industrialist, now 83, had contacted his former partner and later archnemesis Henry Clay Frick, whom he had bankrupted and embroiled in a long series of vengeful lawsuits. The two had not exchanged a word in nearly 20 years, but Carnegie now expresed his desire to see Frick and bury the hatchet. Frick's response was swift and memorable. "Yes, you can tell Carnegie I'll meet him," he told the messenger. "Tell him I'll see him in Hell, where we both are going." In this riveting history, Lee Standiford shows how these two titans' friendship and devilish feud dominated the American business world during the Gilded Age.
Two founding fathers of American industry. One desire to dominate business at any price.
