It provides vivid details of the behind the scenes activities as well as soldiers' and bystanders' perceptions of the actual fighting. Toland has written several books about World War II and he notes in his preface that he interviewed thousands of people for this book, however the lack of any reference or bibliographic notes reduces its efficacy as an academic source.
