Gr 5–7—The day that would live in infamy is brought to life in the audio version of Shelley Tanaka's illustrated historical perspective (Scholastic, 2002) of America's introduction to WWII. Told through the eyes of four very different people, it gives a brief account beginning shortly before Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor through the next day. The unfolding events are shown through the unique points of view of Peter Nottage, a seventh grade boy in Hawaii who witnessed the bombing; George DeLong, a seaman on the USS Oklahoma; Commander Mitsuo Fushida, who led the first air strike; and Ensign Kazuo Sakamaki, who participated in the Japanese submarine attack on the Harbor. Although the author has done a great deal of research on these four people, her portrayal of the Americans as bumbling and ill-prepared as contrasted with the depiction of the Japanese as heroic and patriotic to the end may be confusing for young listeners with little previous knowledge of this event. The book concludes with an epilogue that explains what happened to the four individuals. Charles Carroll's narration is somewhat flat. Have the book available for listeners to peruse the photos, paintings, maps, and diagrams. A supplemental purchase.—Laurie Balderson, Hamilton-Holmes Middle School, King William, VA
