Editorial Reviews

MAY 2017 - AudioFile

Evangeline, young cousin and ward of King Richard, is the Silent Songbird. Blessed with a heavenly singing voice, she silenced it when she escaped a creepy, unwelcome political betrothal by running away and passing herself off as a mute servant. Jude Mason’s narration fails to transport listeners to medieval England. Her storytelling cannot overcome the clichés, repetitions, and slow pace that destroy any chance to build interest or suspense. There is no nuance to her English accent, making the dialogue unrealistic in a culture in which aristocrats and peasants should be identifiable by their speech. Overall, this hybrid of history and romance is disappointing. N.E.M. © AudioFile 2017, Portland, Maine

RT Book Reviews

Dickerson weaves a compelling tale that takes place long ago in England. Written in the third person omniscient point of view, we encounter lies, deceit, attempted murder, jealousy, rage, forgiveness, faith and hope. This book will have you jumping out of your seat with anticipation at times. Moderate to fast-paced, you will not want this book to end. Recommended for all, especially lovers of historical romance.

King Richard's young cousin Evangeline is given as a reward to his trusted but shadowy adviser Lord Shiveley, but she, pretending to be mute, flees and joins a group of servants returning to their home village. A terrific YA crossover medieval romance from the author of The Golden Braid.
