Tales from the Great Recession
In this book, I want to give a synopsis of my personal experience during the Great Recession in the United States from 2008 to 2011. This time was extremely hard financially for millions of Americans and I was part of that wave of people that lost their jobs during this time. In the United States, your job is what defines you and it is the first topic of conversation with someone at the coffee shop or at the bar. In the same year 2009 when the economy was in a crisis from the Great Recession, I was faced with the reality that the job market went through a transformation and millions of good paying jobs disappeared in less than a year. With the dissolution of companies that had been in business for close to a century, a sense of insecurity was quite visible in many areas of the economy. During the early 2010's, New York City did undergo many changes in the policing of its citizens and the most unpopular one was stop and frisk. As many New Yorkers know, this was advertised to deter crime but, it took away people's rights to walk down the street and not be frisked by the NYPD. I remember a few instances where I went through the same situation as many black and brown New Yorkers where the police would stop you, ask for ID and search you with the pretense that you fit the profile because of your body movements. Now I have to say that most people that encounter the police do not do so voluntarily and therefore their experience is not pleasant by any means.
