Snodgrass (Voyages in Classical Mythology, ABC-CLIO, 1994) presents an alphabetically arranged gathering of short essays, generally one to five pages long, that describe in an easy yet fact-filled style hundreds of utopias-those fascinating "good places" of literature. Each entry covers a utopian "site," literary work, author, character, theme, genre, or idea. Vigorously specific, the text is packed with details of plot, biography, publishing history, social context, and critical response. Each essay ends with a string of cross references to related articles within the work. The illustrations are excellent. Complementing the strong individual essays are appendixes listing primary sources, titles featured in the text, a long if unannotated bibliography, and a comprehensive if unsubdivided index. This is a useful source for public libraries.
