About the Author

About The Author
Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle KStJ DL was a British writer, best known for his detective fiction featuring the character Sherlock Holmes. Originally a physician, in 1887 he published A Study in Scarlet, the first of four novels about Holmes and Dr. Watson. In addition, Doyle wrote over fifty short stories featuring the famous detective. The Sherlock Holmes stories are generally considered milestones in the field of crime fiction. Doyle was born on 22 May 1859 at 11 Picardy Place, Edinburgh, Scotland. His father, Charles Altamont Doyle, was born in England, of Irish Catholic descent, and his mother, Mary, was Irish Catholic. Doyle was the doctor on the Greenland whaler Hope of Peterhead in 1880. He completed his Doctor of Medicine degree on the subject of tabes dorsalis in 1885. Doyle was a prolific writer; his non-Sherlockian works include fantasy, science-fiction stories, and humorous stories, as well as plays, romances, poetry, non-fiction and historical novels.
