Gr 8-10Young romance is difficult at the best of times, but when you're dealing with a life-threatening illness as well as the problems that can arise from a cross-cultural relationship, it can seem downright impossible. Such are the trials facing 16-year-old Leah Lewis-Hall. Left alone right before Christmas (by her mother who has just been married for the fifth time), Leah is admitted to the hospital for treatment of a broken finger. Further tests indicate bone cancer. During her stay, she meets Ethan, a handsome Amish boy, and is drawn to him despite the difficulties she has understanding his culture. Factor in the mysterious nurse Gabriella, who may or may not be an angel, and you have a story that is an interesting blend of romance, mystery, and problem novel. The characters are captivating and sensitively drawn and the plot is fast paced. There are strong religious themes but the author avoids being preachy. A satisfying book that also provides insight into the Amish way of life.Robyn Ryan Vandenbroek, formerly at Otterville Public School, Ontario
