This third and final book in the Beka Cooper series is read insightfully by Susan Denaker, who manages the lengthy story’s array of voices and accents, creating characters that make for a full listening experience. In this book, Beka, now a member of the Provost’s guard, is working on a case that threatens the royal family of Tortall; she needs her tough policewoman’s skills and more otherworldly gifts to get to the bottom of the threats. Narrating Beka’s journal entries, Denaker’s voice is smooth and thoughtful, and when she expresses Beka’s grief and rage, she shows her talents as a character actor. Her portrayal of the story’s suspenseful twists will leave listeners holding tight to their chairs. J.C.G. © AudioFile 2012, Portland, Maine
