Enola Holmes and the Mark of the Mongoose (Enola Holmes Series #9)

"Listening to a rollicking adventure mystery narrated well is a delight, and that's the case with this newest installment in the Enola Holmes series. [Series narrator Tamaryn] Payne brings the wry humor, boisterous personality, and incomparable wit of Enola to life so well that listeners will wish they could join her for tea." -AudioFile on Enola Holmes and the Elegant Escapade

In May of 1890, Enola Holmes is finally fully on her own and, no longer hiding from her older brothers Sherlock and Mycroft, attending classes and occasionally pursuing her chosen profession as a scientific perditorian, a finder of lost things and people.

Wolcott Balestier, the representative of an American book publisher, arrived in London on a singular mission - to contract with English authors for their latest works. When Balestier disappears on the streets of London one day, his great friend - Rudyard Kipling - bursts into Enola's office looking for help in finding him. Brash and unwilling to hire a young woman, instead he turns to Sherlock Holmes. Convinced that evil has befallen Balestier, at the hands of rival American publishers who pirate the works of English authors, he sets the elder Holmes on the trail.

But Enola is not one to accept defeat, especially not to her brother, and sets off on her own - determined to learn the truth behind the disappearance of the young American. Can book publishing truly be so ruthless and deadly or can the missing man be rescued from his apparent fate and returned to his friends and loved ones?

The redoubtable Enola is determined to do just that, even if it means working with her brother Sherlock!

"Engaging and atmospheric." —Mystery & Suspense Magazine

Gr 7 Up—This latest in the series continues the adventures of this intelligent, curious, witty, and engaging heroine. Enola Holmes, sister to the famous Sherlock and Mycroft, is ready to solve her first case under her own name. Unfortunately, her first potential client refuses to see her as the competent detective she is, and rudely declines her services in favor of her brother. Determined to work the case despite this misogyny, Enola embarks on the trail of a missing man identified as "Cotswold" who disappeared one evening while on a walk. Using her skills of observation and her ability to remake herself into any number of characters, Enola infiltrates the downstairs kitchens as easily as she partakes of tea in wealthy drawing rooms gathering needed information. The world of late Victorian London is captured in the many layers of grit and grime that reside one street over from the pomp and pageantry of great wealth. Springer expertly shows how society is muddling through turn-of-the-century transitions as gender roles are questioned, science behind the discovery of new things, and change is in the wind. Enola embraces it all, and through grit, determination, a sense of humor, irony, and sometimes sheer luck, she solves her case. While the series need not be read in order, it does have a story arc that will satisfy far more by doing so. Once readers have read the books, send them to the Netflix series for a visual take on the stories. VERDICT Recommend this book and series far and wide. Students who like steampunk, fashion, girl power, historical fiction, and light mystery will enjoy these well-written novels.—Connie Williams
