One of the great classics of English literature is also one of the strangest. Written in between 8th and 10th centuries, the Old English (Anglo-Saxon) epic poem Beowulf was virtually unknown until translations began to appear in the 19th century. It opens a window upon an age and culture alien to our own: the dangerous, desperate warrior world of Northern Europe during the early Middle Ages. But the work is much more than a history lesson. It is also a rousing adventure full of action and heroism. Most of all, it is a poetic masterpiece. Even in translation, the reader can hear in its fierce, hard language the clang of armor and the mighty tread of monsters.
