Description: This is the second in a series on auditory evoked potentials, following McPherson's book on the later auditory evoked potentials. As with the first book in the series, the author is a widely recognized expert in the field with a strong record of clinical research.
Purpose: The author attempts to provide an introduction to and intermediate coverage of the auditory brainstem response (ABR) and its principal clinical applications. These goals are well accomplished.
Audience: This text is intended for graduate students in audiology. It also certainly would prove an excellent resource for those audiologists wishing to expand into these areas of practice.
Features: Following a brief introduction to auditory evoked potentials, the author provides a clear and succinct description of the auditory brainstem response. Her section on the clinical applications of the ABR is augmented by an extensive chapter of illustrative case studies. The author does a good job of placing the ABR within the context of clinical audiologic practice. She provides an appendix of exercises for the student as well as a glossary of relevant terminology.
Assessment: Given the expanding range of evoked potential used by audiologists, one might question the value of a text solely devoted to ABR (although the author does include some descriptions of the 40-hz and SN-10 responses). Standing as one part in a series of evoked potentials by the publisher, this text is in fact quite a positive contribution. This is an exceptionally easy read to read textbook. The author has provided a very user friendly edition which complements the initial book in this series.
