From the Author

This book is the product of a father/daughter collaboration. The father, Harry Gilbert, was born 1918 in Cleveland, Ohio. The daughter, Diana Gilbert Smith was born (a number of years later) in Cumberland, Maryland. Harry is a retired rocket research scientist and teacher. Diana is a 5th grade science teacher at Central Elementary School in Simsbury, Connecticut. Harry's interest in the universe and Einstein go back to his childhood-long before he graduated Case Institute of Technology (now Case Western Reserve University). His expertise in the areas of the history of gravity, relativity and stellar black holes is derived from years of extensive independent research. Diana discovered she wanted to be a teacher after she graduated from Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio. In 1986 Diana enrolled in the University of Maryland, at College Park where she earned her M.Ed. in curriculum and instruction.

The success of the collaboration may be judged by the fact that Gravity, the Glue of the Universe was recently honored by the American Association for the Advancement of Science by listing in "Best Science Books for Junior High and High School Readers in 1998."
