This beautifully photographed book demonstrates that stamped, stenciled, and printed designs don’t have to be complex to be striking . . . it’s the projects themselves, created with a clean, elegant aesthetic, that are so captivating.

11/15/2015 Fine art and design meet craft in this book of hand-printing and patterning techniques by designer and teacher Joyce. The step-by-step projects are designed to beautify and decorate many different surface types, such as paper, leather, metal, ceramics, clothing, furniture, walls, or just about anything else. Aside from the introduction and a handy appendix of templates, the book's title serves as the table of contents, listing the three main sections of the book. Stamping is the most immediate and simple hand-printing technique, and Joyce has included some newer materials, such as rubber carving blocks that take the place of linoleum or wood blocks and all-surface stamp pads that further ease the process. In the Stenciling section, readers can gain experience working on tote bags, lamps, tablecloths, chairs, and other objects. The Paint section offers some suggestions for the freehand application of brightly colored patterns wherever the reader sees fit. Crucially, sound advice about matching particular types of pigments and paints to specific surfaces is liberally dispensed. VERDICT Fine artists and crafting hobbyists of all skill levels can take inspiration from this cheerful guide.
