Read an Excerpt
Her police driver training came into play as she wrestled with the wheel. Going with the skid took all her skill to bring the car under control. They came to a halt in a cloud of dust, just short of a stand of young kauri trees.
For what seemed an eternity they both stared into space as though dazed, until she became aware of Adam's deep voice somewhere close. "Are you okay?"
Her spinning brain struggled back to its senses. He sounded normal, thank heaven, although she thought she detected a tremor in his voice. Drawing in a tight breath, she nodded. "Are you?"
"I'm fine. Boy, that was some driving. What in hell happened?"
The sound of his voice triggered noises and sensations in her head. A bang that sounded like an explosion, just before they started to spin. A rifle shot? Of course. She'd known they were being followed. Everything fell into place. "Dear heaven! Someone shot at us!"
"What?"
Bushes on the side of the road. A sniper in the trees.
How could she have been so stupid as to ignore the obvious? The possibility had never entered her head. Fear clawed at her stomach, growing, building inside, until it burst from her in a cry of terror. "Get out of the car. We're sitting ducks in here."
