Overview

In honor of the 100th anniversary of the very first Tom Swift novels, the first 4 were rewritten to make them more accessible--and more appropriate--for today's readers. Racial slurs were replaced although the speech cadence of the only Black character was retained. Additional mechanical and science information was added and sentence structure was modernized and tightened.

In this 4th novel, Tom Swift and his father complete an incredible undersea craft for a submarine competition they intend to enter. Most of the other entries want to do things the honorable way, but their main competition has other ideas.

Sabotage and attempted murder are not off the table as far as their new enemy is concerned. And, when an incredible fortune in sunken gold is now possible, the enmity between them increases to the point where only one may come back to the surface and live!

This novel includes details of the fascinating new form of silent propulsion Barton Swift devises and how his son helps make it a reality.

About the Author

Victor Appleton was the house name for a small group of authors such as Howard Garis who were well known in the day for their own works, but were willing to write these stories for a flat fee based on an outline provided by publisher, Edward Stratemeyer. Today, the original printings of these books are worth hundreds of dollars.

Thomas Hudson has been writing Tom Swift novels and novellas since 2009 and decided to undertake this 4-book homage in time for the Tom Swift 100th Anniversary Convention held in San Diego during the sumer of 2010, almost exactly 100 years after these first books were published. He claims that when he needed to write a Tom Swift novella about the original Tom as a companion volume for one of his series books, knowing the cadence used and manners of speech of the various characters from his work on these older stories helped him greatly.

Thomas Hudson is not a house name except in his own house where his wife calls him, “T.”

One of his English teachers in high school called him aside one day to say, "If I ask for a paper of 1,000 words, please stop tuning in 3,000. I won't read the last 2/3rds of them." So, he wrote 1,000 words then nearly 2,000 "Blah" before writing a dirty word. She saw it, called him aside the next day to say, "You got me!," and they became great friends.
