Dear Reader:
Most teachers we know welcome the participation of parents and guardians in the education of their children. Let them know of your concerns, and be persistent in getting them resolved, whether it means requesting a meeting or setting up something that your student can pursue.
Your message to the teachers is this: we care, and we want to be involved.

Sincerely,

Requesting a meeting with child's grade school teacher

Ms. Emily Gordon
Smalltown Elementary School
Smalltown, OH

Dear Ms. Gordon:
I would like to meet with you soon so that we can work together to resolve a problem Brian is having this year.
As you know, he is a conscientious student. But he seems to be overwhelmed by the workload and specifically the amount of time he spends on homework.
He comes home from school and sometimes spends as much as two hours a night on homework, and then he worries whether he should do more. I believe he brings on much of this pressure himself, but I need your help in getting him to understand that he is doing well and does not have to be so hard on himself.
I'm sure we agree that we don't want to discourage a good student with a great deal of potential, but we also want to allow a young child to enjoy school and his life outside of school.
Please call me at (xxx) xxx-xxxx as soon as convenient so that we may set a time to get together.

Sincerely,

Karen Diamond

To teacher about child's academic difficulty

Ms. Emily Gordon
Smalltown Elementary School
Smalltown, OH

Dear Ms. Gordon:
Our son Brian is enjoying his school year thus far, and has had many good things to say about you and his classmates.
However, as I am sure you know, he does seem to be struggling with math. I would appreciate your thoughts on how we can help him get a better grasp on the concepts of math before he falls too far behind the rest of the class.
I would appreciate a call.

Sincerely,

Karen Diamond

Follow-up on child's academic difficulty

Ms. Emily Gordon
Smalltown Elementary School
Smalltown, OH

Dear Ms. Gordon:
Thanks for your note about Brian's schoolwork. It is good to hear about his strengths in reading comprehension and writing.
I appreciate your suggestion about hiring a tutor for extra lessons after school. I will contact your classroom aide, Shannon Graham, and see what we can set up.

Sincerely,

Karen Diamond

Hiring a tutor for child's academic difficulty

Ms. Shannon Graham
Smalltown Elementary School
Smalltown, OH

Dear Shannon:
Thank you for agreeing to tutor Brian in math. Ms. Gordon has many good things to say about you and the fact that you work directly with her in the classroom should help Brian a great deal.
Ms. Gordon has offered to help you plan a specialized enrichment course for Brian.
We look forward to seeing you at our house on Saturday, October 12 at 10 a.m.

Sincerely,

Karen Diamond

Requesting extra classwork for absent child

Ms. Emily Gordon
Smalltown Elementary School
Smalltown, OH

Dear Ms. Gordon:
Brian will be absent from school on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, May 7 through 9, to attend to some important family matters out of state. We have already informed the principal.
Could you please assign him reading and homework to keep up with the class while he is away? Feel free to call me if you'd like to discuss the assignments. Brian will be back in school on Thursday May 10.
Thanks again for your help. We are very happy with Brian's academic progress this year.

Sincerely,

Karen Diamond

Requesting help for classroom problem

Deborah Smith
Fairview Elementary School
Fairview, PA

Dear Ms. Smith:
My son Brian is a student in your fourth grade. We have been looking forward to meeting you during parent-teacher conferences next month.
However, I would like to ask for an appointment in the coming week to discuss with you a matter that is causing us a great deal of concern.
When we moved to Fairview over the summer, Brian left behind a number of good friends and was quite apprehensive about starting in a new school. We spent a considerable amount of time assuring him that when he started school he would find new friends and fun things to do.
However, from the first day of school we found that Brian was having a problem with several children in the class who have chosen to tease him constantly. Brian comes home quite upset every day and does not want to go back.
I am sure you would not tolerate such behavior if you were aware of it; we hope you will intervene now. We would like to meet with you to discuss the best way to deal with this problem.
Knowing my son as I do, I am sure that given a chance he will fit in and do well.

Sincerely,

Karen Diamond

Requesting child be assigned to another class

Fran Murphy, Principal
Fairview Elementary School
Fairview, PA

Dear Dr. Murphy:
I am writing to request that my son Brian be transferred to a different fourth grade class and that we meet to discuss conditions in his classroom.
Brian has been the subject of nearly constant teasing from some of the other students in Miss Smith's classroom and it is making him miserable and unable to learn. The problem began right at the start of the school year. I have been in contact with Ms. Smith by letter and in a meeting two weeks ago, but the problem has not been resolved.
It is now a month into the school year and Brian is still the target of the other children. I am asking that Brian be placed in another classroom immediately so that he does not fall farther behind in his schoolwork.
We specifically chose this town because of the excellent reputation of the school district. I am disappointed that an elementary school teacher could not settle a problem as basic as one child being cruel to another.
I look forward to hearing from you very soon to set a meeting and to discuss his new classroom assignment.

Sincerely,

Karen Diamond

Thanks to principal for help in resolving problem

Fran Murphy, Principal
Fairview Elementary School
Fairview, PA

Dear Dr. Murphy:
I just wanted to thank you for your help in resolving the problem our son Brian was having in his fourth grade classroom. I am happy to report that he is doing very well with his new teacher, Mr. Fisher, and is returning to the happy, well-adjusted little boy we knew him to be.

Sincerely,

Karen Diamond
