About the Author

Ayelet H. Danto, MS, OTR/L, is an occupational therapist who has worked in various school settings with a broad range of diagnoses. She received her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Yeshiva University Stern College for Women and a master's degree in occupational therapy from Columbia University. She currently resides in Passaic, New Jersey with her husband and children.
 
Michelle Pruzansky, MS, OTR/L, is a pediatric occupational therapist specializing in the treatment of children with autistic spectrum disorders. Michelle received her bachelor's degree from Yeshiva University Stern College for Women and her master's degree in occupational therapy from Columbia University. Michelle currently lives in Bergenfield, NJ with her husband and children. She is the head therapist and clinical coordinator at school #19 in Passaic, NJ, and also works at the Department of Children and Families, Passaic Regional School.

Description: This is the second edition of a quick and easy guide to practical occupational therapy interventions for use with children. As a reference for pediatric therapists looking for different ideas for treatment sessions, this book provides direction and activities to augment any treatment session.
Purpose: Organized to address specific challenges, the book suggests activities using illustrations and a bulleted format that allow therapists to briefly review how the activity should be presented.
Audience: The book is meant to provide treatment activities for pediatric practitioners. However, more experienced pediatric practitioners may find parts of the book rudimentary since the suggested activities are likely already part of their practice. Entry-level practitioners or students who may lack the foundational experience with implementing the suggested activities may find this book more helpful.
Features: The book is organized into sections titled according to commonly seen areas of difficulty in a pediatric-based occupational therapy practice: motor, cognitive, social, and sensory difficulties. Specific skills are addressed in each section. For example, the hand skills section covers subtopics such as open webspace, hand strengthening, and pinch-grasp manipulation. This enables practitioners to target a desired outcome without needing to scan the entire section to locate the activity. In language familiar to pediatric practitioners, the book highlights the issues without using a theory or frame of reference; instead it uses a bottom-up approach. Practitioners can quickly acquire ideas for a treatment session that may not necessarily be supported by the evidence, which is often linked to more theoretical approaches to treatment. A unique contribution this book makes is the visual representation of the activity paired with a short description. At times, however, the pictures are too dark and appear to have been taken by an amateur photographer.
Assessment: Although this book provides 1,001 treatment ideas, as an experienced therapist, I found the activities too basic. The research cited to support the suggested activities is minimal and/or is addressed using outdated references. This could never serve as a reference to peer-reviewed literature, rather it serves as a quick reference guide for use in the clinic setting. Another book, Occupational Therapy Interventions: Function and Occupations, Meriano and Latella (Slack, 2008), provides greater depth, detail, and literature to support the suggested intervention ideas. While the Meriano and Latella might be more widely used in an academic setting, it contains fewer visuals than this book.
