Chapter One
God Makes a World
What's Up
Before Creation, there was nothing. There was no one—except God. Everything was just dark emptiness. There were no people, no animals, no trees, and no plants. There were no oceans or continents, not even earth and sky! There was nothing. God spoke these words and started the creation of everything: "Let there be light!" His most amazing creation was the first man and woman—made to be very much like God himself.
Action Adventure from Genesis 1; 2:3
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was empty, and darkness covered the deep waters. God said, "Let there be light," and there was light. God called the light "day" and the darkness "night." Evening passed and morning came, marking the first day.
Then God said, "Let there be a space to separate the waters of the heavens from the waters of the earth." God called the space "sky." Evening passed and morning came, marking the second day.
Then God said, "Let the waters beneath the sky flow together into one place, so dry ground may appear." God called the dry ground "land" and the waters "seas." Then God said, "Let the land sprout with every sort of seed-bearing plant, and trees that grow seed-bearing fruit. These seeds will then produce the kinds of plants and trees from which they came." And evening passed and morning came, marking the third day.
Then God said, "Let lights appear in the sky to separate the day from the night." God made two great lights—the larger one to govern the day, and the smaller one to govern the night. He also made the stars. And evening passed and morning came, marking the fourth day.
Then God said, "Let the waters swarm with fish and other life. Let the skies be filled with birds of every kind." Then God blessed them, saying, "Let the fish fill the seas, and let the birds multiply on the earth." And evening passed and morning came, marking the fifth day.
Then God said, "Let the earth produce every sort of animal." God made all sorts of wild animals, livestock, and small animals, each able to produce offspring of the same kind.
Then God said, "Let us make human beings to be like us. They will reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, the livestock, all the wild animals on the earth, and the small animals that scurry along the ground." So God created human beings in his own image; male and female he created them. [He] said, "Be fruitful and multiply."
Then God said, "I have given you every seed-bearing plant and all the fruit trees for your food." God looked over all he had made, and he saw that it was very good! And evening passed and morning came, marking the sixth day.
And God blessed the seventh day and declared it holy, because it was the day when he rested from all his work of creation.
Key Verse
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
Genesis 1:1
Now What?
It's amazing to look around at the world and understand that God created everything you can see. From the tiniest bug to the mammoth killer whales—from little yellow flowers to giant redwood trees—God thought up every bit of it and made every single thing himself. God's most special creation was saved for last—the first man and woman. He made humans to be able to think and feel—like he does. You are made in God's image, to be like him. Stop right now and thank him for his wonderful creations—and for making you!
