Overview

The 36 tracks spanning the two discs and 12 years on Fremeaux & Associes' 1938-1950 collection of Louis Jordan performances is a great way to ease into the legendary saxophonist's prolific output. What is a little strange about this set is that it highlights only the first 12 years of the 16 Jordan spent on Decca Records; the last four years go unaccounted for, but to be fair, Fremeaux & Associes advertised nothing short of what they delivered on the album cover. There is no promise of an overview of Jordan's Decca years, just the dates 1938-1950. Many of Jordan's standbys are here, from the rollicking "Salt Pork, West Virginia" to the amusing "I'm Going to Move to the Outskirts of Town," the classic "Is You Is or Is You Ain't My Baby," and even a glimpse of his output with Ella Fitzgerald via "Petootie Pie." ~ Gregory McIntosh
