Overview

In 2000, Harlequin Records released a 25-track survey containing the earliest recordings of Puerto Rican crooner and songwriter Felix Manuel Rodriguez "Bobby" Capo (1922-1989). Dating from the years 1940-1944, these pleasant performances were etched into 78 rpm platters at a time when Capo was still associated with Xavier Cugat's increasingly popular dance band. Accompaniments on this collection, however, are credited to pianist Noro Morales, the J.I. Quinton Orchestra, Cuarteto Marcano, Cuarteto Caney, and Augusto Coen & His Golden Casino Orchestra. Capo's suave presentation places him in league with Mariano Mores, Nestor Fabian, Beny More, Edmundo Ros, and Desi Arnaz. His early recordings are ideally suited for intimate wining and dining. While some of the music is sentimental, refined, and sweetly romantic, there is nothing to prevent dancers from getting up and polishing the floor during "Para Que Tu Veras, El Soldado," "Llora Corazon," "El Eco y el Carretero," "Julian el Zapatero," and "En Que Quedamos." An equally enjoyable selection of Capo's recordings from 1956-1957 was released on RCA in 1995 under the title Esperame en el Cielo. ~ arwulf arwulf
