Description: This drug handbook is a necessary part of every oncology nurse's reference library. Year to year there are significant updates and revisions as new drug therapies are introduced and new side effects and/or benefits are discovered.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a reference on the complex nature of oncologic therapy administration. This handbook illustrates the "why" of the use of a medication, as well as "how" it works in the body. This allows for better monitoring by nurses, as well as a better understanding of potential issues that can arise, thus allowing for better patient education.
Audience: It is intended for use by nurses caring for patients receiving oncologic treatment. However, it also would be a great reference for interns and resident physicians on their oncology rotation.
Features: The format is user-friendly, with medicatiions organized by class of drug and then alphabetically. The book covers the gamut of treatment from chemotherapy and biotherapy to rescue agents and symptom management. There are several illustrations, which are helpfully located on the same page as the pertinent text, so readers do not have to search an appendix to find them. The graphics are in black and white, but are well done and accomplish their purpose.
Assessment: This is an excellent reference for oncology nurses. I would like to see more references to pediatric applications, but this handbook is a great addendum to pediatric oncology dosage books.
