INTRODUCTION

I stayed away from quilting for many years. Too big a project: all that cutting and piecing and sewing back together by hand was discouraging.

Eureka! I discovered the sewing machine, and it started to come together. The real break-through, however, was the rotary cutter, which enabled quilters to cut through fabric quickly and accurately. Soon many of my quilting friends were teaching me techniques for quilting on the fast track; I became a quilter.

Quilting became a race. How fast could I actually make a quilt from start to finish. I set a goal for myself: to create a lovely quilt in under 24 hours. My pile of finished quilts got larger and larger; friends learned to accept a quilt from me for every occasion.

In this book, I share with you some of my favorite 24-hours quilts — actually my "Less-than-24-Hour-Quilts." There's not one quilt in this collection that takes more than 18 hours; some as few as six or seven hours. My dear friend Elsie Kirch helped to prepare the quilts for this book along with a group of dedicated quilters including: Faith Horsky, Erica Jarrett, C.J. McAuliffe, Val Shields, Kerry Smith, and Glenda Tucker. Most of the fabric used in the quilts was supplied by the FreeSpirit® fabric company, and the batting is courtesy of Fairfield Processing.

With each quilt, you'll find the amount of time that it took my friends and me to finish that quilt. But it's not a race. Twenty-four hours can be eight days of working for three hours; three eight-hour days, or 24 days of working only one hour per day. Making a quilt shouldn't be a chore. If it takes more than 24 hours to finish one of these quilts, that's okay. There's no prize for the one who finishes first. So whether you can finish your quilt in the allotted time, or twice that time, the results will be the same: a wonderful quilt that you can be proud of.
