Overview

The late 1960's was a politically unstable time. The Vietnam War was rapidly escalating, the North Koreans seized the USS Pueblo, and the moon race was rapidly advancing technology in the effort to put a man on the moon. 3 Years 8 Months & 1 Day is the story of a US Navy Aircrew Survival Equipmentman's time served in the most famous helicopter squadron in the Navy, probably the world, Helicopter Antisubmarine Squadron 4 (HS-4). The stories are told as he and his brothers remember them and cover the time from his enlistment in 1966 to his discharge in 1972. The experiences reflect some of the most historical events of that time period.

About the Author

Aaron Clouse joined the U.S. Navy after graduating high school in 1966, hoping to learn electronics in Navy schools. The Navy needed him to be a Parachute Rigger though. After finishing PR-A school, Clouse was assigned to Helicopter Antisubmarine Squadron 4 (HS-4) and made a Western Pacific deployment on the USS Yorktown (CVS-10) in 1967/68. The deployment was supposed to be to the Gulf of Tonkin but was diverted to the Sea of Japan when the North Koreans seized the USS Pueblo. In March the Yorktown transitioned to the Gulf of Tonkin until July. Later that year the Yorktown and HS-4 deployed to recover the Apollo 8 astronauts and their command module. Early 1969 the squadron again deployed for an Apollo recovery mission, this time on the USS Princeton (LPH-5). HS-4 went on to participate in three more Apollo recovery missions. Clouse transferred to HS-8 in late 1969 when HS-4 was divided into two squadrons and served there until his separation. Clouse then earned an electronics engineering degree at Oklahoma State University and worked in the defense industry for 34 years. Aaron Clouse has also coauthored four books related to CMMI, a process improvement model.
