About the Author

Naomi Long Madgett published her first book of poems at the age of 15 and began her working career in Detroit, Michigan, where she took a job at the Michigan Chronicle. She published her second book of poetry in 1956, then taught in the Detroit School system for 13 years before being hired at Eastern Michigan University in 1968, where she was a professor of English until 1984. In 1972 she was a founding member of the collective which launched the Lotus Press.
