A Box to Die In: Mystery At the Sugar Mill
Captain Jarrad Hope begins life in a Philadelphia orphanage. He never knew his real parents and reached adolescence along with a houseful of his peers without any lasting mental or physical harm. Beginning at age twelve, his young and formative years are spent with adoptive parents who wrangle him from the child welfare system and whisk him away to Miami, Florida. Rather than succumb to the torture and degradation from his new mother and father, he takes advantage of their vast fortune and possessions and commits the first murder of his career, his stepfather, Nick Mancuso. The heir to a luxury yacht beyond human comprehension and literally millions and millions of dollars, Jarrad becomes an international hero and receives his directives from the president, the attorney general and other high-ranking members of the U.S. armed forces. The captain is instrumental in the rescue of three teenagers who are buried alive on the island of St. Johns only to find himself condemning one of them and sentencing the young girl to a horrible death. His witnessing to unthinkable atrocities committed against an innocent island population drive him to the decision to execute the young woman and her father. It's not all blood and guts however, and many lasting alliances and happy marriages occur, not in the least the romance and marriage of Captain Hope.
