A Boy Growing Up under the Nazi Boot and the Greek Civil War (Greek Language Version)
I was born in the small village of Vresthena, nestled near the historic city of Sparta. I grew up during the brutal German occupation, followed by the Greek Civil War.
As a child, I witnessed the German brutality of torture and execution of men, women, and children. The once-serene village was engulfed in turmoil as the German forces imposed strict rules for us to follow.
I vividly remember the day the German troops arrived in our village when I was playing soccer with my friends. We all watched hundreds of soldiers jumping off their trucks with their machine guns pointed at us.
In broken Greek, they shouted where are your fathers hiding? We were all too scared to utter a word. They fired a burst of machine gun fire in the air and asked us again. Where are your fathers hiding? Most of us were crying, fearing certain death.
One kid panicked by the machine gun fire and began running and screaming for his mother. We heard ALT, ALT followed by another long burst of machine gun fire. They shot Giani while running and calling for his mother's help.
We watched our friend Giani falling face down on the hard ground. We all ran to see if we could save him. Giani was dead, with blood oozing out of his body and staining the ground around him with red blood. Witnessing such a traumatic event at the tender age of five left me with deep and lasting emotional scars that can never be healed.
The challenges and hardships I faced and endured during this dark period of my life have served as a testament to the human capacity to persevere in adversity and survive.
