Overview

A story about war, community, and sacrifice.

For Ben Hewes and his family, life in 1757 New England was good – they were surrounded by family and friends in their small, colonial community. The world was a developing place, though, and forces beyond their control would forever change their lives. In this story, Ben is called to defend his family – his colony – and finds himself caught in the middle of a hostile and political conflict alongside other members of his community.

This is the story of one family whose life – although not
specifically reflected in the history books – illustrates the significant sacrifice and hard work of colonial families.

Stories like this one prove that it is the canvas of the average person upon which history is painted.

About the Author

Mark Daniels is currently a Social Studies Specialist for Orange County Public Schools in Orlando, Florida. He is a graduate of Emporia State University and Almeda University and has completed graduate courses at Kansas State University, The University of Kansas, and The University of Missouri –Kansas City. In the twelve years he has been in education, Mark has taught at Argentine Middle School in Kansas City, Kansas, Walker Middle School in Orlando, and is currently the manager of American History in the Sunshine, a Teaching American History grant in Orlando. Before teaching, Mark was employed in emergency services for over 20 years, working in law enforcement, fire service, and EMS.
Mark takes his passion for history on the road as well, performing first-person narratives (re-enactments) of three individuals from his family history. Benjamin Hewes, the lead character in this fiction, Roger Crary, and Private Samual A. Daniels all make appearances regularly in classrooms to bring a sense of our countries history to students from elementary through high school.
The most important part of his life is his family. As the father of two children and the grandfather of two boys, interest in the family is his primary focus. As should be evident in the pages of this book, he also has, as the Declaration says, a firm reliance on Divine Providence.
