Description: This is a concise overview of the recent evidence-based literature in child and adolescent psychiatry. Each chapter contains an appendix, which consists of suggested readings, assessment measures, and other useful information.
Purpose: According to the editors, the purpose is to provide a comprehensive overview of the main disorders encountered by child and adolescent psychiatrists in clinical practice. The authors' intention is to present in condensed form any research findings significant for clinical practice. These are worthy objectives, but psychopharmacology is not sufficiently covered.
Audience: The book is written for clinicians in child and adolescent psychiatry. The authors appear to be credible authorities.
Features: The book covers disorders and other related topics in child and adolescent psychiatry. All the chapters are organized in the same way: an introduction, definition and classification, epidemiology, the clinical picture, etiology, treatment and outcome. The organization is one good feature of the book. Also, tables and algorithms present information in a more structured and systematic manner. Psychological interventions are detailed particularly well. One shortcoming, in addition to the lack of psychopharmacology, is that the references are not provided for the studies cited in the chapters.
Assessment: This book is helpful as a reference for assessment measures, interview techniques, and psychological interventions used in the field of child and adolescent psychiatry. However, it is not as comprehensive as other books in the field and because it does not cover psychopharmacology well, it is less clinically applicable for psychopharmacologists.
