A Crow Came Cawing: A Modern Day Fable

Abby lived alone in a small house by the cornfield. Every morning, she would sit on her front porch and rock in her chair, watching the sun rise over the horizon. She had no family, no friends, no one to talk to. Her only companions were three crows that would perch on her front porch and

caw at her. She didn't mind the crows. In fact, she liked their company. She would feed them some bread crumbs and talk to them as if they understood her. She would tell them stories about her past, her dreams, her regrets. They would listen attentively, nodding their heads and tilting their eyes.

One day a new crow came along. She noticed there was something different about this crow. He was growing larger every day. He was no longer a scrawny black bird, but a majestic creature with glossy feathers and a sharp beak. He looked like a king among crows. She wondered why he stayed with her, when he could fly away and explore the world. One morning, when she awoke, she noticed her crow was gone. She felt a pang of sadness in her heart thinking that he had finally left her, that he had found a better place to live. She went out to the porch and sat in her rocking chair, feeling lonely and empty. A few days later, she heard her doorbell ring. She gasped when she opened her door. There stood an older gentleman in a black suit wearing a black hat staring back at her.
