A Forest On Fire: A 15-Minute Tale of Terror
We were sound asleep one night in our lonely prairie cabin. Our horses and cattle were ranging quietly in the woods. The fire in the fireplace was dying down slowly, but the coals still kept our single room nice and warm. Snuggled within the blankets, we knew nothing of what was happening outside.
Suddenly, about two hours before day, the snorting of our horses and lowing of our cattle awoke us. I took my rifle and went to the door to see what beast had caused the hubbub. I expected to see the shadow of a wolf or a bear coming near. I could only wish it was one of those.
I stepped outside with my rifle cocked, and that’s when I was struck by the glare of light reflected on all the trees before me. The light carried as far as I could see through the woods.
