Eight sets of opposites, depicted in a garden setting, include the inside of an apple cut in half and the outside of a whole apple; a big beetle and a small ladybug; a short garden worm and a long snake; a mother bird asleep on a nest and three newly hatched babies wide awake; a closed bud and an open flower with petals, etc. The last page expands to a three-page foldout inviting children to find their own pairs of opposites. A pigtailed redhead takes readers through her garden, strikingly simple graphics demonstrating such opposing pairs as a "short" caterpillar and a "long" snake, "inside" and "outside" an apple (with jaunty leaf reorienting itself in opposing directions). Some pairings are more sophisticated than others-"different" and "alike" opposes two pairs of seemingly identical shamrocks in spot-the-difference fashion (one shamrock in one pair has four leaves, not three). The final spread presents the whole garden, with the girl holding butterflies "in" a jar; open the gatefold, and they fly "out," over a scene in which many opposites are cleverly embedded. Despite its apparent simplicity, it's not for the beginner, but a nifty complement to Laura Vaccaro Seeger's Black? White! Day? Night! (2006) for older toddlers and preschoolers. (Picture book. 2-5)
