K-Gr 2—This book delivers a portrait of innocence as well as difficult issues of death and loss. Sophie and her friend Emilio mourn her great-uncle, Old Man Tom. Before his passing, Tom shared wisdom in the form of sayings and trinkets and promised to help them from heaven if they ever need him and that's exactly what happens. Vigneault is hailed as one of Canada's greatest poets and chansonniers of the 20th century. His short story of friendship, generosity, and love was originally published in French, and the translated narrative and the delicate pen-and-ink and watercolor illustrations by Stéphane Jorisch lose nothing in translation. The accompanying CD includes the tale's narration and nine original songs featuring singers Martha Wainwright, Thomas Hellman, Paul Campagne, and Jessica Vigneault. David Francis effectively and expressively narrates this gem.—Terri Perper, Middletown Public Library, MD
