A Guide for Effective Pyschotherapy
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW BEORE SEEING A MENTAL HEALTH PROVIDER
Obtain a referral, make an appointment, and off you go to see the psychotherapist---right? No, WRONG! Dr. John Morella, in his book, A Guide for Effective Psychotherapy, (Helm Publishing) offers a step-by-step guide to enhance your therapy outcome even before you walk through the therapy door. Morella says that the millions of people each year, who seek help for their mental, emotional, and personality disorders, do so without understanding the complexities of psychotherapy. Morella states, “I’ve seen the anxiety on peoples faces when they arrive for their first session. Most of the angst is attributed to the lack of basic information that would empower them to a more vital role in the therapy process. This book will achieve that objective.” Wouldn’t you check out the contractor who wants to build your house? What’s his reputation, credentials, and meet with him to discuss your “dream house?” Of course you would. Your mental health deserves the same scrutiny. This book offers direct, easy to read and understandable counsel on finding the right psychotherapist for you, your child, teen, or family. What’s the difference in education, training and degrees of a psychologist, psychiatrist, social worker, psychoanalyst, licensed professional counselor, or someone who calls his/her self a psychotherapist? The many titles of mental health providers are explained, so you can make an intelligent choice for your needs. Dr. Morella says he frequently must advise clients of the differences, not just for their need to know, but for insurance eligibility purposes. One of the most significant chapters is dedicated to understanding the major types or orientations of psychotherapy. Does it matter to you and your issues if you are treated by a professional provider that is trained in a psychoanalytic or a behaviorist model? The answer is a resounding, “yes!” Five major therapy treatment orientations are discussed in plain language, and in a manner that will leave you with a “good feel” as to what theoretical type seems appropriate for you and your treatment issues. “All mental health providers are not created equal in their training or their approaches to resolving mental health disorders,” says Dr. Morella.

About the Author

Dr. John Morella, Ph.D., resides in Lafayette, Louisiana, in the heart of “Cajun Country.”
Upon his retirement from a twenty year practice of providing psychological services to the public, he wanted to rest and “smell the roses.” However, as he looked back on his career in both his practice, and many years as an academic, he felt a need to write.
“A Guide For Effective Psychotherapy” was the result. He observed many patients struggle with understanding the process of psychotherapy, and believed a guide would benefit the consumer. He is currently working on a second book, with a working title, “Darn It, Give Teens a Break.” Research supports that the vast majority of teenagers are psychologically healthy, and do not deserve the negative stereotypes perpetrated by the media and ourselves.
