Description: This "comprehensive review of evidence-based knowledge about the etiology, nature and treatment of stuttering" uses tables to provide an easy way to compare research findings at a glance. The previous edition was published in 1995.
Purpose: According to the authors, they "have endeavored to preserve the goal of all prior editions, to maintain a chronicle of the most important research in stuttering, while thoroughly updating the Handbook with the most recent advances in the field." Another edition seems timely since it has been over a decade since the last edition during which, as the authors note, "at least 700 new studies of stuttering have been reported."
Audience: Since the expanded version of the original booklet was published in 1959, this handbook has been adopted as a text in university courses on stuttering.
Features: This edition includes new work in genetics and brain imaging as well as characteristics of the person who stutters. The current focus on combining the behavioral with the cognitive and attitudinal components of treatment is covered. The charts and tables present data from multiple studies in a clear, easy-to-follow format. Because this book addresses a lot of areas and corresponding research, no area is covered in depth. However, an extensive reference section provides the reader with the resources to seek further information if desired.
Assessment: An excellent feature of this edition is that it includes the necessary background information about stuttering in addition to new advances in research on stuttering. I agree with the statement on the back of the book, "This edition captures these new developments without losing the historical information."
