A Lifetime of Exciting Memories
One member of the Greatest Generation has lived a life that closely parallels that depicted in the well known Horatio Alger Myth. It is made up of true stories from his early life in America's heartland during the great depression, to his later experiences in education and employment, and then followed by him seeing those "far away places with strange sounding names". It gives an account of some detail of him making his way from being a dirt farmer, through the beginning jobs of industry and beyond to advanced levels of higher education that led to interesting employment and adventure in many parts of the world.

His life began in Montana during the roaring twenties. He lived in South Dakota through the great depression when much effort was required just to keep one alive, and through the midwest dust storms referred to as the "dirty thirties". He escaped the life of the dirt farmer by working at beginning level industry jobs in Chicago. (this was financed by the purchase of a sow in exchange for two cans of pipe smoking tobacco). He put himself into college in Spokane, WN in 1941. When the country entered World War Two, he enlisted in the Marine Corps, touring the United States in ground support of dive bomber pilot training.

His early adventues with a number of female companions from coast to coast are covered in some detail. These came to an abrupt halt when he met his Lifetime Kindred Soul on a triple blind date. He married that lovely University Of Maryland Coed in 1944, only to have their extended honeymoon interrupted when he was ordered to join the invasion of Japan. That operation was fortunately cancelled by the atom bomb. Instead, he toured the Admiralty Islands, Bougainville, snd Peleliu, and spent an interesting six months in North China courtesy of the Marine Corps. The honeymoon and much more education began after he was discharged in May of 1946.

About the Author

The content of this book is the true story of my life beginning 26 December 1921 and continuing for 89 years to January 2011. It is a true account of my early life on midwestern farms, my education in country schools, and my experiences during my working life and retirement. The major part of my working life involved electronic engineering with most activity of a supervisory nature. I hold several patents and was responsible for the development of a number of methods and implementation of systems which made the then current projects successful. Since retirement, my efforts have been directed toward the design of my dream home, volunteer activities in our town and church, and fishing, swimming and sailing.

T have spent considerable time researching my family genealogy, have self published two volumes of history and genealogy on my Father's surname of "Iwerks" and have done considerable research into my Mother's surname of "McElvain". Copies of the resulting books are in the Library of Congress, the LDS collection in Salt Lake Utah, and in state archives and genealogy libraries throughout the east and the midwest.
