STARRED REVIEW! "This sweet, fun read-aloud drums up nostalgia for all the rhythms, noises, and dreams of the city. —School Library Journal starred review

Based on the story of an internationally renowned violin prodigy of color.

One bright city morning, Penelope and her mom make their way to the farmer's market. On street corners and train platforms, musicians and performers enchant Penelope, speaking to her through their floating, booming notes. The noise of the city keeps the pair moving—until Penelope hears a sound so magical she knows she has to play the instrument that makes it.

About the Author

Pilar Winter Hill is a young Brooklynite and classical violinist studying at the renowned Juilliard Pre-College Program and known globally for her viral performance videos. Arguably the first female African-American International Violin Competition major prizewinner, Pilar aspires to make her mark as a musician, author, actress, and conservationist. She hopes that by sharing her discovery and love of music, she can inspire other children to pursue their own callings.

Olivia Duchess grew up in a musical family. She took violin lessons when she was a child, and she shared a keyboard with her brother, who was also a drummer. Beyond her love of music, Olivia graduated from Leeds University after studying Graphic and Communication Design. She's now an illustrator based in the UK.
