Description: Dermatopathology is daunting to novices. The authors of this book seek to demystify the learning process by using structural analogies with common objects such as plants, food, and household objects to teach pattern recognition of characteristic findings seen under the microscope. The book is replete with color micrographs with markings indicating cell types and abnormal changes in cells one should be aware of in order to make the proper diagnosis.
Purpose: The purpose is to initiate the uninitiated in how to read skin biopsies.
Audience: The audience is dermatology residents and pathologists learning how to read skin biopsies.
Features: The book makes learning dermatopathology fun and relatively painless. The visual mnemonics are effective teaching tools. Helpful clinical tips are in light blue boxes. Descriptions of early lesions and late lesions of the same condition give an overview of how the histology changes over time, depending on when the biopsy was done during the disease process. The emphasis is on pattern recognition and making the diagnosis on low power. It would be easier to read and study the book if the color histology photographs were located next to the written text rather than making readers flip to the end of the chapter and search for the corresponding numbers cited in the text. The flipping back and forth is inconvenient and interferes with concentration. There is no index.
Assessment: This book provides a framework for learning the basics of dermatopathology. There are visual mnemonics to help imprint images that are characteristic for certain tumors and inflammatory processes. My favorite dermatopathology book is still Histologic Diagnosis of Inflammatory Skin Diseases: An Algorithmic Method Based on Pattern Analysis, 3rd edition, Ackerman et al. (Ardor Scribendi, Ltd, 2005). Weedon's Skin Pathology, 4th edition, Patterson (Elsevier, 2016), is also an excellent reference. This new book defines basic immunohistochemistry markers and describes basic concepts competently.
