Description: This book serves as an overview for new and experienced nurses in the U.K. who support students in clinical practice. The book is written to align its suggested approaches with the Nursing and Midwifery Council's (NMC) Future Nurse: Standards of Proficiency for Registered Nurses. The book serves as a step-by-step guide for preparing registered nurses to help students understand clinical expectations and meet competencies in a practice setting as expected of them by the NMC. The guidance and tips include how to prepare for students; orientation, interviews, assessment, and feedback; understanding the practice document; planning learning opportunities to include simulation and other additional support; and managing challenges during clinical practice.
Purpose: The book provides readers with a guide to offering support to prelicensure nurses in the clinical setting. Using the Standards of Proficiency from the Nursing and Midwifery Council, the book offers a step-by-step approach for registered nurses to prepare for, orient, assess, provide feedback to, and support student nurses while in the clinical setting. The book doesn't include an introduction from which to learn the author's specific objectives.
Audience: This book is primarily for registered nurses who intend to support nursing students in the clinical setting. In addition, academic staff who support practice supervisors and assessors might also be interested. The book is a good resource for its intended audience. Other than the author's title as head of programmes at Kingston University, the book does not offer additional information or credentials to signify the author is deemed a credible authority on the subject.
Features: The book includes excellent tips registered nurses can incorporate into the supportive role including feedback that is meaningful to students. The book also provides advice on how to identify and manage some of the most common challenges students face and how they can be supported. The inclusion of the Extract of Skills from the NMC Standards of Proficiency for Registered Nurses is a beneficial appendix to this book. Adding an introduction might better establish the author's objectives.
Assessment: The book provides meaningful information to a very specific audience: registered nurses who support prelicensure students in the U.K. during their clinical practicums. Other similar books primarily focus on registered nurses who are serving as nurse preceptors for other registered nurses, not for nursing students. Some of these books include Fast Facts for the Nurse Preceptor, 2nd Edition, Ciocco (Springer Publishing Company, 2020), A Real-World Guide for the New Nurse Preceptor, Edmondson (Nurseology Consultants, 2018), and The Effective Preceptor Handbook for Nurses, Swihart (HCPro, 2014). While some of the details offered in those books might prove beneficial for nurses working with students/prelicensure nurses, this book offers focused advice for its intended audience. While this is the second edition, the book does not reveal what updates have been made to the first edition.
