Description: This is a selection of five papers from Japan describing clinical dimensions of the post-cardiac arrest syndrome.
Purpose: Post-cardiac arrest syndrome reflects multiorgan dysfunction after the ischemic insult associated with cardiac arrest. These reports add data to the natural history of post-cardiac arrest syndrome.
Audience: Providers treating patients after cardiac arrest from varying etiologies may find this work helpful. However, presentations must be carefully reviewed for international relevance.
Features: The first paper is a discussion of epidemiology related to status epilepticus after cardiac arrest. A second presentation compares targeted temperature management (hypothermia) versus primary percutaneous coronary intervention after cardiac arrest. The majority of the book is made up of three presentations on prognosis including the value of lactate clearance data, implications of presentation after choking or hanging, and, finally, a comparison of predictive scoring systems. Each presentation begins with an abstract followed by introduction, methods, results, and discussion. Presentations have excellent color illustrations and make effective use of tables to present data. Each paper includes a reference list with citations from primary literature dating to within two years of publication. The table of contents lists only titles and authors. There is no index.
Assessment: Data are presented that sheds additional light on the post-cardiac arrest syndrome. Many of the presentations are single center work and, as such, chapters must be considered an exercise in hypothesis generation. For clinicians with a specific interest in this problem, this book may be helpful.
