Description: This quick resource on the anesthesia care of obstetric patients is designed to serve as a middle ground between briefer protocol books and more in-depth reference resources. The previous edition was published in 2009.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide quick information about anesthesia concerns in obstetric patients. These are worthy objectives and the authors do a good job meeting them. Access to the content online allows portable access to material.
Audience: The book is written at the level of residents or junior level physicians. Advanced students on the rotation also would appreciate it. The reading style is easy and succinct. The authors represent fine institutions and are credible authorities.
Features: The book is divided into antepartum and labor and delivery and then specific disease states. For the antepartum issues, it encompasses drugs, doses, and conditions anesthesiologists should be aware of. In some aspects, the book reads as a simplified obstetrics book to provide quick information. Important aspects are bolded and clinical pearls highlight the material. The book is designed to direct readers to specific arguments. For example, a reader curious about what platelet cutoff would be recommended for epidural placement could make a quick index search to find the relevant page. The book doesn't read like a standard paragraph format, but rather like bullet points, so it is easy to obtain information. The information is accurate and succinct, although obstetricians/gynecologists are not the target audience for this book. Those who are peripherally involved in obstetrics/gynecology, specifically obstetric anesthesiologists, would benefit from the brevity of the presentation.
Assessment: This is an accurate and brief book for obstetric anesthesiologists that serves as a bridge between protocol books and more expansive textbooks. Those in obstetrics may prefer books with more detail.
