Description: This is a general reference guide to basic modes of mechanical ventilation.
Purpose: It acts as an introduction to the modes and liberation from mechanical ventilation.
Audience: Although without a preface, it appears the book is written primarily for residents and intensivists who work in critical care areas, including adult intensive care and emergency rooms.
Features: The three parts of the book cover noninvasive ventilation (NIV), invasive mechanical ventilation, and discontinuation from mechanical ventilation. Modes in the first two parts are thoroughly discussed in general terms, but readers should be aware that the particular patient safety considerations involving mechanical ventilation (appropriateness of modes, importance of ventilator alarms, etc.) are only briefly mentioned, not thoroughly discussed. Each chapter begins with a case presentation, followed by an introduction, then the chapter specifics. Chapters end with a summary, case presentation discussion, and a list of standard and current references. Numerous images, tables, and graphs appear throughout the book, which ends with a detailed index.
Assessment: As a respiratory therapist with two decades of intensive care experience, I found this book to be an excellent read and a worthy resource for physicians as well as a terrific review for respiratory therapists.
