About the Author

The Editor
Dr. Goldstein is Professor of Medicine (Neurology) at Duke University and the Durham VA Medical Center, Director of the Duke Center for Cerebrovascular Disease and the Duke Stroke Center, and a Senior Fellow in Duke's Center for Clinical Health Policy Research.
He has published over 400 journal articles, reviews, editorials, book chapters, abstracts, and other professional papers including two books. He has served on numerous AHA/ASA committees and guideline writing groups including as Chair of the American Stroke Association Advisory Committee and the AHA Stroke Council Leadership Committee.

Description: This well written book provides an overview of stroke prevention and management based on the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association guidelines.
Purpose: The purpose is to summarize the vast amount of existing information to support stroke prevention and treatment using evidence-based neurology. This clinical application of the AHA/ASA guidelines is intended to help bridge the gap between guidelines and practice.
Audience: The editor intends the book for neurologists, both generalists and stroke specialists.
Features: This comprehensive book covers all the relevant aspects of stroke management and prevention. It includes information on stroke in women, stroke in blacks, stroke in children, post-stroke rehabilitation, all very important topics that are not always covered in stroke prevention books. Each chapter begins with a clinical case and guides readers through the clinical approach and medical decision-making process. Color figures are a plus and the quality of the radiologic images is superb (see chapter 6 as an example). The bullet points and tables highlight the important aspects of each chapter and provide a very useful summary. The only disadvantage I see to this book is that the references are available online only. Although it allows the book to be smaller and more portable, it disrupts the reading/learning flow of readers who like to review the source of the information.
Assessment: This is a very good book, useful, concise, well written, and easy/fun to read. It's also a small book, light and easy to carry. It shares some similarities with Stroke: A Practical Approach, Geyer and Gomez (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2009), but it is much more complete, the figures and graphics are of better quality, and overall it's a "friendlier" book.
