The attention to detail and extensive research gave this reader a wonderful sense of time and place. The trials and tribulations of farming and living off the land, the discovering of their faith and living within that faith are aptly portrayed. The cast of characters were well rounded, interesting, and realistic as well. "

Snelling creates some good word-pictures, as in a scene where a mother gives a toddler a piece of candy, then reaps the sticky consequences. The main characters are well developed, and I didn't feel the lack of not having read the original series. (B.J. Sedlock, Historical Novels Review)
