Overview

Uyless Black’s A Swimmer’s Odyssey: From the Plains to the Pacific, a motivational book, takes the reader on the author’s life journey filled with adventure, adversity, and achievement. His belief that putting in the time with effortful study of details and sustained motivated practice would give him access to the career he so passionately sought: Underwater Demolition Team (UDT) frogman.

Black's swimming odyssey started in an improbable location, the semi-arid high plains of southeastern New Mexico. He describes how he taught himself to swim in ponds scattered around his father's ranch.

His passion led him to the waters of the Pacific Ocean where he describes his experience in the Vietnam conflict, including the Tonkin Gulf incident, Marine raids, and the historic Danang beach landings. Black's struggle after an injury while in UDT training forced him to redirect his career path. His understanding of the physical and psychological requirements for achievement and his struggles along the way give insight into overcoming adversity.

About the Author

Uyless Black spent his childhood and teenage years on the great plains of America’s southwest. During his adult years he was an officer in the U.S Navy, where he won the Navy Commendation Medal for his actions in Vietnam. After leaving the Navy, he was a software programmer, the Ombudsman for the Federal Reserve Board in Washington, DC, and a business owner. He was the founder of three data communications network consulting firms, became an international lecturer, and wrote thirty-five books on the emerging Internet technology; some published in several languages. For this past decade, he has also devoted himself to investigating and reporting on the social, political, and financial climate of America.

Why the Author Wrote the Book:
Most books that deal with success focus on the events that led to the success. After thinking about my experiences in trying to become a frogman (a member of the Underwater Demolition Teams, a forerunner to the SEALs), it occurred to me that a motivational book would be equally effective if it dealt with….yes, failure to achieve success.

But one that emphasized honest and dedicated effort to achieve that goal, and with the failure, to have the grit to keep on going.

That is why I wrote A Swimmer’s Odyssey. To convey the message that a failure in one endeavor should not lead to anyone throwing in the towel.

The book’s message, made interesting (I hope) with compelling stories, is simple: There is no short cut to success.
