About the Author

Mederic Louis Elie Moreau de Saint Mery was a French Creole. He barely escaped the French Revolution, arriving in Philadelphia where he opened a bookstore and wrote his most famous work about the the French part of Saint-Domingue.

William Cobbett was a British Member of Parliabment. After writing The Soldiers Friend(1792), he fled to France only to find himself having to flee the French Revolution for the United States. While he was in the United States he translated the text herein.

Jonathon B. Schwartz has a lifelong love of history and started this endeavor while working at Colonial Williamsburg. He currently resides in Virginia with his family.
