A Work in Progress
Ever wonder what it would be like to be god? To create in your own image—or destroy? Not as much fun as you’d think. Blending philosophy, satire, humor, and memoir, my novel, A Work in Progress, is Kurt Vonnegut and Blaise Pascal’s love child on a Robitussin binge; literary fiction mixed with true-life experiences to create a fanciful rendering of what happens when a flawed, confused, yet hopeful schmuck builds a universe.

I conceived and wrote A Work in Progress while serving a sentence at Fort Dodge Correctional Facility in Iowa. It’s the story of a New Yorker named Conner, a nobody forgotten by fate. After an existence God (in this case, me, the author) preordained to be monotonous, Conner prepares to end his life. It’s also the story of Autumn—a fictional rendering of the woman responsible for my incarceration, whom I seek to punish the only way I can: in a world I control. And there’s Jasper, a man I created to test my theories on fate and free will. When Jasper discovers he’s my pawn and sets out to do something so horrible that God can’t ignore him—instead of acting out the story I’d planned—the world I shaped breaks free of my control. Jasper’s attempt to hijack a plane is thwarted by terrorists with the same agenda. I save him, drawing my creation from his reality to mine through an act of literary prestidigitation. Jasper arrives in my prison cell while I’m writing his story, and begins using my theological gobbledygook—and his ability to be imaginary—to convince the inmates to revolt. Conner now finds himself battered by fate, in love with Autumn (part of her punishment), standing high up in the North Tower of the World Trade Center on a particularly poor morning for sight-seeing. Despite Conner’s new-found love and pledge to live, fate, hijackers, and the author have other things in store.
